A custom shower is typically the most expensive part of the project because of waterproofing, tile installation, and glass enclosures. Plumbing relocation and high end fixtures also add to the cost. Curbless shower systems require additional structural work, which can increase the initial investment, but improves long term function and accessibility.

On average, two weeks. A larger bathroom with extensive modifications like repositioning the toilet, shower, or vanity, or building a custom shower with extra water features or LED lighting, could take three to four weeks. You have to move the plumbing to move the fixtures, and this adds a lot of time and cost.

When it comes to faucet fixtures, mixing and matching metals is fine, but try to avoid matte black, as it shows water spots and mineral deposits more prominently. Try to avoid black tile in the shower; although it looks gorgeous, as you can see in this photo. But in a short time it will show a lot of soap scum, water spots, and mineral deposits, making it very labor-intensive to keep it looking clean. Traditional grout is basically sand with coloring added. That "dirty look" is actually mold that has developed deep into the pores of the grout. The longer you let it go, the deeper and blacker the mold spreads. What you are supposed to do is steam clean the grout lines at least once a year, let it dry for a few days, and then apply a sealer. In nearly 40 years in the business, I've never met a homeowner who has done this. With today's technology, there are grouts on the market that contain epoxy-type additives, making them resistant to mold and stains. We take it upon ourselves to use this type of grout on all of our tile jobs, we provide the grout. After the tiling is complete, we show you a color chart, under your lighting conditions, and ask you to select the color you prefer.

With larger tiles, the grout lines are spaced further apart - in your mind's eye, it's a visual perception that makes the room look and feel larger. Small tile, no larger than two inches in size, is recommended for shower floors that slope toward a drain to allow for proper water runoff.

Use a tile-industry cleaner, not household cleaners. Brands like Tile Lab, Fila, Laticree, or Custom. Spot clean tile floors with hot water and steam.

Whether bullnose tile is available or not, bullnose tile in the shower or tub surround tends to make the tile look framed out and finished. We recommend going with a cleaner and more modern look and use metal edging, or plastic or marble pencils.

Using the same wall tile in the back of your niche(s) is simple and clean looking; however, adding a decorative tile in the back of the niche(s) is one way to make things pop, or consider adding a tiled accent wall to break things up.

Another solution is, instead of trying to add a decorative band of waterfall mosaic tile, which is an outdated look, tile one entire wall differently. Tile the side walls with a larger tile, and accent the back wall with a decorative tile or pattern. There are so many options when it comes to tile in sizes, colors, styles, patterns, textures, and finishes - you're only limited by your imagination and the amount of money you want to spend.
